Criminal Law in the Netherlands.

Your child must appear before the juvenile court. Read the summons and discuss with the lawyer what is alleged and how the hearing will proceed. Check who is expected and what documents are needed.

The accusation and the personal situation require everyone's attention. Support your child in organizing their own memories. School problems or counseling do not replace assessment of the evidence.

The lawyer represents the interests of the young suspect. Discuss what information you as a parent can provide and what topics your child should be able to discuss confidentially with the lawyer.

Collect appropriate information about school, care and available support. Make it clear which agreements are feasible and who will provide help. A general intention to do better provides little practical guidance.

Prepare which questions you do not understand and which facts you know for sure. Don't fill in your child's missing memories. Allow the difference between your own perception and information from others to remain visible.

Afterwards, discuss what the judge has decided and what agreements or conditions apply. Ask who will carry out the next steps and what time frame applies if a legal remedy is being considered.
