Criminal Law in the Netherlands.

You are suspected of shoplifting for the first time. Ask what facts are alleged and what documents or images exist. A first incident does not provide a firm guarantee about the settlement or consequences.

Write down your own memory of the store, products, payment and control. Save the receipt and other original information. Separate uncertainties from facts you have observed yourself.

A shopping claim, a store ban and a criminal sanction are different things. Read each document separately. A payment to the store does not automatically end a criminal case.

If you are being interrogated as a suspect, discuss your rights and the accusation with a lawyer. A statement from the store or a cash register discrepancy does not automatically tell the full story.

If you receive a prosecutorial penalty order, do not treat it like an ordinary bill. Have the consequences of payment and the options for contesting the decision assessed in a timely manner.

Keep the store's documents and official notices, including receipt dates. Discuss the correct response to each. Disputing a store claim does not itself lodge opposition against a prosecutorial penalty order.
