Criminal Law in the Netherlands.

The charge sets out what the prosecution alleges. It is not a finding of guilt or a complete summary of the evidence. Start by reading each numbered allegation separately.

Identify the alleged act, the period, the location and the person or object involved. Check whether the allegation concerns your own act, acting together or another form of involvement.

A charge may contain alternative allegations or different legal descriptions. Ask your lawyer how they relate to one another. Do not assume every listed alternative has already been established.

Discuss which documents support or contradict each disputed element. Mark what you recognise, what you dispute and what remains uncertain. Avoid filling gaps in the file with assumptions.

Disputing the allegation is not automatically the same as formally objecting to the court summons. Your lawyer can assess the available route, timing and relevant legal requirements.

Ask which parts the prosecution must prove and what needs further investigation. Keep the latest charge and any amendment together so you prepare for the actual case before the court.
